The weather in Sri Lanka is dictated by two monsoon seasons although over recent years like most countries there seem to have been some variations to typical weather conditions.
December-March- West coast, Hill country and South Coast
April -September- Ancient Cities, East Coast and North
It is still possible to visit out of seasons although you can expect weather to be less favourable for some activities. Travelling out of seasons may be preferable for those who like a cooler climate or wish to avoid the crowds
It is essential that you have a comprehensive travel insurance before you go to any foreign country. You should seek medical advice from your local health practitioner before travelling to Sri Lanka and ensure that you receive all of the appropriate vaccinations.
When visiting the religious sites and places of worship covering up is always appreciated. Wearing shorts and vests is unlikely to attract much attention.
The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupees whereas some of the larger hotels accept US Dollars and GBP. Currency notes are Rs.5, 000, Rs2, 000, Rs1, 000, Rs500, Rs100, Rs50, Rs20 and Rs10. To check whether notes are genuine look for a lion watermark.
Check with your bank regarding charges for using ATMs abroad
Sri Lanka’s festivals offer visitors the chance to experience the diverse cultures that shape the island's identity. The festivals are an integral part of lives here. Throughout the year there are many religious festivals celebrated by the Buddhist, Hindu, Christian and Muslim population. The full moon day, known as Poya is marked on a monthly basis as a bank holiday, alcohol is prohibited on this day.
