Kandy

Kandy

Following the capture of this beautiful city in 1815, the British called this ‘Royal City’ of the Sinhala kings Kandy, as they could not pronounce ‘Kande-Uda-Rata’. With a tranquil lake at its heart, Kandy is surrounded by hills from which you can enjoy panoramic views of this vibrant city. With a local leather market, the famous Temple of the Tooth and traditional cultural dance shows every night as well as a range of hotels offering ayurvedic treatments as well as a number of smaller temples in the surrounding hills, Kandy is a ‘must-see’. Only a short ride from Kandy tourists will be able to spend the afternoon wandering in Peredeniya Botanical Gardens, where giant bamboo, fruitbats and vast avenues of tropical trees form a fantastic backdrop to a peaceful stroll.
